Job Shadowing Website and Resource
Years ago, I met this company at a career development conference and I wanted to provide a resource for individuals looking to learn about different careers. Back then, the price did not fit my practice as an offering to my clients however now, their site is free.
Part of my clients homework is when they identify their final 4 career selections, in order, I want them to engage in informational interviews. I provide a list of 20 sample questions along with questions they learn from their assessments about the work environment they need and tasks they would love. However, sometimes its hard to find someone, although through family/friends, most professions can be found.
When I did my podcast a few years ago, I asked almost all of the same questions to my guests so people could compare different professions. If you haven't listened to the 13 different career professionals I interviewed, I'd recommend you check out, "What's Your Career Story" to learn more.
The questions asked for the Job Shadow website include:
What do you do for a living?
How would you describe what you do?
What does your work entail?
What’s a typical work week like?
How did you get started?
What do you like about what you do?
What do you dislike?
How do you make money/or how are you compensated?
How much money do insert career/job name___ make?
How much money do insert career/job name__ make starting out?
What education, schooling, or skills are needed to do this?
What is most challenging about what you do?
What is most rewarding?
What advice would you offer someone considering this career?
How much time off do you get/take?
What is a common misconception people have about what you do?
What are your goals/dreams for the future?
What else would you like people to know about your job/career?
Here is a complete list of all the job shadowing interviews conducted with over 400 different career professionals. I think this is a facsinating resource. Have fun!
