Learning Foundation: Does your Bright Child Struggle In School?
Learning Foundations is a San Antonio-based cognitive training center. Learning Foundations assesses and strengthens foundational cognitive skills, enabling them to become comfortable, independent learners with the tools to be successful in all areas of their lives. Students are challenged and empowered in new engaging ways in a nurturing, safe environment.
The initial concept was developed by Fran Tarkenton, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, who organized a team of reading specialists to help a struggling family member. Based on their findings, Learning Foundations was born. Subsequently, in 1969 Patricia Pate Ph.D. opened an extension of Learning Foundations in San Antonio. Starting in the 1990s, an independently owned and operated Learning Foundations by the Ames Group began to integrate new neuroscience-based programs, designed to strengthen learning by improving cognitive processing skills.
As the years went by, Learning Foundations continued updating programs in response to newly available research. In 2012, new partners joined the venture with the goal of opening more centers that could reach as many struggling students as possible. Professional development is ongoing for directors and trainers, who have access to the latest advancements in cognitive training, including dyslexia intervention. Degreed professionals work one-on-one with students over a period of months. Those who attend may be students who are not getting the educational help that they need, students for whom tutoring has not been a solution, students who want to improve their processing skills to make learning easier, or adults who have struggled with attention and learning challenges and are ready to make a positive change in their lives. Distance learning with an online coach is available for some programs.
Learning Foundations' research-based, clinically driven programs deliver real results for students along with their families. Students experience a boost in their confidence as they begin to enjoy school and the learning process, some for the first time in their lives. The sharing of any victories is encouraged on the WOW Moments bulletin board, and families celebrate each improvement and milestone along the way. Students from the early years now bring their children to Learning Foundations. Most gratifying are the visits from former students which often result in joyful tears and the sharing of stories of successful graduations and careers, in addition to fulfilling lives. Learning Foundations has been proud to be a part of the rich history of San Antonio for almost 50 years. Learning Foundations' continuing mission is to strive to empower their students and families through their unique approach to overcoming learning challenges.
